Bamboo in Your Bed

bamboo1Did you know there is a relatively new fabric available as an option now.  It is constructed from bamboo fiber and has many attractive properties for use as clothing and bedding material and is now offered in duvet cover sets.

I live in Alabama, the summers here get very hot.  It is not a dry heat but a sweltering, muggy kind of hot that makes it feel as though you can’t breathe.  I moved to Alabama from Ohio over 20 years ago and will never forget my first summer here.  I didn’t think I would survive.

I got a summer job at a clothing store at the mall and would often get there before 10am.  So I spent most of my day in the relative comfort of an air conditioned building.  When I left the building in the afternoon or early evening, that is when reality smacked me plaintively in the lungs.  I felt as though I’d walked into a furnace. It would take me years to accept this climate and I’m still not certain I’m all the way there yet.

So why the boring story about a humid climate?  To illustrate one of the most provocative qualities of fabric made from bamboo fiber. The ability to whisk the sweat away at roughly 4 times as quickly and efficiently as cotton. It also dries incredibly fast, breathing, almost like your skin.  As a clothing option in the heat of summer it becomes obvious why this makes a great choice. As a bedding choice, well it’s just perfect and we offer several choices of bamboo duvet cover sets at White Oak Attic for this reason.

You know the feeling I’m talking about.  There is nothing like cool sheets in the heat of the summer and that is especially true if you live in the climate I describe here in Alabama.  Soggy, heavy, damp air makes for a difficult night’s rest.  Even in air conditioning it is sometimes difficult to find comfort.

Enter the bamboo fiber.  I did a little nosing around to see what I could find on the subject and found a number of good sources of information on the topic.  For example, this site provides a great overview and even includes comments from a number of readers about the fabric.  I also read with interest the bacteria resistant properties of bamboo.

As a duvet cover set, bamboo fabric seems the perfect choice since it also resists wrinkling much better than cotton and is touted by many as an eco friendly option as well (although this particular point seems to be controversial according to what I found – seems it depends on how the bamboo is processed to arrive at the finished product).

In our case we offer complete duvet cover sets made from bamboo fabric.  The benefits of covering your comforter or duvet with a duvet cover are many.  Extending the life and wear are the obvious ones but it also offers an easy way to keep your bedding clean reducing the ills that can be perpetuated by the various dander that can collect in a comforter ~ eeewwww :-(

Anyway, it seems bamboo isn’t just for pandas and ornamental gardening anymore, it can also be just wonderful in your bed!
