Mullingar Pewter

mullingar pewter beakerIf you ever have occasion to visit Ireland, a trip to visit Mullingar Pewter would not be wasted.  In 1974, Mullingar Pewter went into operation, engaging in an Irish tradition that dates back roughly 800 years.  Today, they have a reputation for producing some of the finest pewter in the world.

Pewter is an alloy, a mixture or solid solution of two or more metals. Pewter is typically comprised mostly of tin, blended with hardening agents.  In it’s earliest forms it was used primarily for utilitarian puposes.  Pewter was used for cooking utensils, dinnerware etc.  In more recent years pewter is also highly valued by collectors and for decorative enjoyment.

Looking beyond the Mullingar brand of pewter and exploring the metal as a collectible I found a great resource right here on the Internet.  The Pewter Society website contains a well organized list of resources.  They offer details about makers identifying marks, how to identify fakes, and explain the difference between forgeries and reproductions.

Since there is an abundance of places to buy pewter it offers a lot of promise as a hobby.  If you enjoy vintage collectibles, pewter is an excellent choice since it has been around for centuries.  If your interest lies more in the creative side artists are producing beautiful works of art using pewter.  On the practical side, pewter is still an excellent choice as attractive serving pieces.

Find a number of Mullingar Pewter pieces and other pewter collectibles in my eBay store.
