Natural Candles, Beeswax

candles beeswaxIf you’re looking for things to do around the house to enhance the pleasant, cozy feel of the place and maybe save a little money at the same time, instead of buying commercially prepared discount candles, beeswax candles might be something to consider.

I like a natural setting and since moving to my current home in 2005 I’ve been looking around for things to do to take advantage of a more rural environment.  My uncle came for a visit a couple of summers ago and mentioned I should consider a couple of beehives out here.  My husband and I haven’t quite made up our minds to go down this path but I have been exploring the idea.

In addition to honey, I’ve learned I could also make beeswax candles if I get really good at beekeeping.  While I’m still not sure I want to bite off the responsibility of managing beehives I do like the idea of beeswax candles.  Turns out it is pretty easy to make them too.  All you need is beeswax, collected by beekeepers and offered for sale, molds to pour them into and of course the wick.  I found instructions here for making candles beeswax.

Advantages are that beeswax is a natural substance and it is easy on those with allergies who might not be able to enjoy commercially manufactured candles, beeswax candles don’t have all the extras.  Having an old soul, I like the mental image of being able to make something pretty easily that is practical and has a lot of extra benefits to use around the house.  My mission now is to find some resources for beeswax candles or the materials to make them.  They certainly make an excellent fit for White Oak Attic.

My next mission is to see just how long this tradition has been around and how it was managed before all the equipment evolved that we have now.  I can’t help but be curious how all those bees were managed without those full coverage suits in use today.  I’ll be sure to let you know what I find out.
