Vintage Gadgets From An Online Thrift Store: Thread-a Matic

Cleaning out boxes of treasures to be offered in my online thrift store here at White Oak Attic is relaxing to me.  I never know what I’m going to find. I have always enjoyed looking though piles of vintage goods, even if it is just old, everyday-life, stuff that may have little value.  I just find it fun to contemplate what life must have been like when the latest item to emerge from the pile was originally in use or offered in area stores as a “modern” convenience.

Today, it’s a Thread-a Matic.  A device offered to make an everyday chore more manageable.  When it was much more commonplace to make clothing and other home linens by hand, threading a needle would be one of those little chores that could use a shot of efficiency.  Enter the Thread-a Matic.  At first glance it doesn’t look like much by today’s standards.  How many of us worry about threading needles these days?

Back in the 1940′s when this handy little gadget made the big debut onto the local merchant’s shelves it was likely a big hit.  Greeted with excitement by ladies who spent many hours lovingly assembling family clothing.  Especially appreciated by the aging homemakers whose eyesight may have declined just a bit.  I’m at an age now where I’m finding a few little tasks that used to be done without a second thought, now present little obstacles and can appreciate what such a handy tool as this one might represent if I had to thread needles on a regular basis.

Some things really never do change.  Just like back in the 1940′s our eyesight does grow a little weaker as time goes along, we all still appreciate shortcuts around mundane tasks, and this appreciation still creates a market for someone’s product.  Having the Thread-a Matic on the shelf these days might better serve as a way to stimulate conversation or bring a little smile from its nostalgia than it will from the original purpose of threading a needle.

UPDATE: August 19, 2010 This item has been sold.  It’s off to enjoy it’s place as an online thrift treasure for someone new.

    Hi Rhoda!

Nice to meet you (virtually speaking). Do you go to the meetups? I went to my first one this past Friday. Hope to make this a routine. I lost my “day” job in October and am working toward getting this blog to produce a replacement income (along with the other site I mentioned in my post at AlabamaBloggers) I hope we get a chance to meet in person. I’ll check out your blog.
