The mounts family lived in Ward from 1953 till 1957. I have many memories of this area as dad was a coal miner for the Coal Company.

How well I remember angel hair. At one time I believe it had fiberglass in it. They came out with the bubble lights and I remember those as well. My dad, his brothers and my grandfather Harvey Young used to go on the hill sides in Ward and cut down trees for Christmas.

Andi, thanks for your comments on the post. Glad to have you stop by and share information. I hope to start adding more posts soon - life has just gotten in the way :-) I just started a new job that has me traveling a lot over the next several weeks. I plan to use some of the evenings tucked away in the hotels to catch up on writing here. Stay tuned :-)

Hi Tom,

I am the author of this blog, my mother was raised in Ward, WV and both of my grandmothers' were born in or near there. There is little left these days to identify as Ward, WV. It was a coal mining town and so when the operations came to an end the buildings were all torn down. A few of the remaining residential homes were left but as I understand it even all of those have been cleared out recently. My aunt was still living there until just a couple of months ago and was recently told to leave with just a 30 day notice (she and her family were renting the lot on which they had a mobile home). For now, the annual Ward Community reunions continue each September. I have tried a number of times to get feedback from organizers and haven't really gotten very far with that, but then I work full time and have been able to devote much time and effort to it. I live in Alabama so that makes it tough too. I have had plans to visit some (plenty of relatives in and around the area) but that just hasn't worked out - still hopeful :-) You might be interested in joining a group I started on Facebook - West Virginia Genealogy, there is a Laverne McCombs Legg who is posting there, you may want to reach out to her. Here is the link to the group - http://www.facebook.com/groups/71553156222/ Feel free to contact me with any specific requests and I'll see if I can help in some way. Thanks for stopping by the blog :-) ~Lisa ( I also just noticed Laverne has posted a comment here in the blog as well if you didn't see that already)
